Nick Zahler, Director of Bands
Mr. Zahler currently serves as the Director of Bands at Lakes International Language Academy Headwaters Campus in Forest Lake, MN. Before coming to LILA, Mr. Zahler taught band, choir, and music theory at the Willow River School in northern Minnesota. He also taught marching arts in the Osseo School District for several years. Mr. Zahler graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities with a Bachelor in Instrumental Music Education. There he studied conducting with Jerry Luckhardt and wrote a thesis on transcribing Debussy piano works for band.
At LILA Headwaters, Mr. Zahler conducts the High School Concert Band, two Middle School Bands, two Beginning Bands, and teaches daily lessons. After school, he advises the Tri-M Music Honor Society, assists in running Music Lab, and teaches the LILA Marching Band. Outside of school, Mr. Zahler serves on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Band Directors Association (Northeast) and performs regularly with the Centennial Community Band in Lino Lakes.
The marching arts have been a significant part of Mr. Zahler's life. Mr. Zahler participated in Marching Band for four years while in high school. After that, he marched with the Minnesota Brass Inc. Drum and Bugle Corps for several years - first as a baritone player, then as a conductor. While marching with Minnesota Brass, the corps consistently took home the silver medal in the Drum Corps Associates World Championships each year. Mr. Zahler took his experience and taught marching arts at Osseo High School four years, serving as Assistant Director of the summer and fall marching bands and Director of the winter indoor marching ensemble.
